There’s a new Puzzle (bag) to solve

Newness is great and all, but who doesn’t love a classic? Loewe’s Puzzle bag, the first bag Creative Director Jonathan Anderson designed for the Spanish house, is truly the definition of a modern classic. And now, in celebration of the design’s decade spent as a handbag icon, comes a new iteration as part of the Spring/Summer 2025 collection. Introducing the Loewe Featherlight Puzzle bag. The newest and lightest addition to the Loewe Puzzle family, this bag is made from ultra-lightweight nappa lambskin for a soft and supple feel with a slight sheen, while maintaining the Puzzle’s signature geometric details and unique origami-like shape.

I’ve been lucky enough to get my hands on the new Loewe Featherlight Puzzle bag in the shade dark butter (it kind of reminds me of the buttermilk yellow colour trend which I’m loving right now). So let’s decode this latest creation from Anderson’s design genius. I’m going to compare how it matches up to the beloved original, share my favourite styling inspo with you guys and discuss my thoughts on the colours and sizes available. Time to get started!

Expanding The Loewe Puzzle Family

When Jonathan Anderson took over as Creative Director of Loewe in 2013, he quickly set about putting his eccentrically wacky stamp on the Spanish label. His unique use of structure and art as inspiration soon became known as Loewe signatures. And it wasn’t long before Anderson revitalised the brand’s handbag offering – introducing the now iconic Loewe Puzzle bag. It was actually first created as a men’s duffle in 2014 before being scaled down and introduced into the womenswear offering a year later. Instantly recognisable thanks to its distinctive geometric stitching, the aptly named Puzzle bag became somewhat of a mystery thanks to its unusual origami-like design that looks as if it’s formed from a selection of puzzle pieces. And, of course, it was an instant hit.

The Puzzle is one of Anderson’s more classic looking creations for Loewe – he’s also the designer behind the brand’s infamous cracked egg heels (if you know, you know). So it makes sense that the design has expanded into an entire Puzzle bag family, with mini, tote and bum bag variations. The true beauty and appeal of the Loewe Puzzle bag lies in its design that’s both intricate and refreshingly simple. Statement, yet practical enough to earn a reputation as an everyday classic in so many of our handbag collections, mine included.

I think that the Loewe Featherlight Puzzle builds on this practicality, keeping the popular boxy rectangular shape but making it lighter and noticeably slouchy. It really embraces the slouchier silhouette that we’ve gradually been seeing more of over the past few years. And this kind of style has been performing so well because it’s genuinely what us bag fanatics have been craving – elevated practicality.

Let’s Compare With The Original

Despite a similar overall look, there are some key differences between the new Loewe Featherlight Puzzle and the original Puzzle bag. An obvious distinction is the material. Unbelievably soft and smooth nappa lambskin leather makes the new Featherlight design not only lighter but it gives it a more elevated luxury feel compared to the grained calfskin that’s typically used for the original. While the original has always been praised for its robust boxy silhouette, the slouchy look of the Featherlight version is so gorgeous and gives it an understatedly chic look that really aligns with my personal style. Plus, it differentiates these two bags enough that there’s definitely room for both of them in my collection!

The Featherlight Puzzle also has distinctively slimmer hardware and is decorated with a leather luggage tug and playful balloon charm which I think adds a fun touch. It shares the same crossbody strap as the original, proving just as practical and versatile. The Featherlight is currently only available in the small size. While the original Puzzle definitely suits being a compact bag, I think that the slouchy silhouette of the Featherlight version would be perfectly suited to larger sizes too so I’m hoping that we’ll see its size offering expand in the future.

Time to conclude. It can be hard to follow up such a beloved classic. But Loewe’s Featherlight Puzzle bag has managed a tricky feat – introducing a new take on a heritage piece while honouring the key features that made the design so popular in the first place. Irresistibly soft and slouchy but with a practical boxy rectangular shape and Loewe’s signature geometric Puzzle design that I’ve loved for years. I think I’ve found my official bag crush for SS25!
