What to Wear to Wimbledon

A Love Letter to British Summer Style

There’s something about Wimbledon that feels beautifully timeless – the energy, the atmosphere, the style. I’ve always admired the way people dress for it – polished, light, and just the right amount of understated. Whether you’re attending a match or simply soaking up the season’s spirit, Wimbledon fashion calls for effortlessness with a touch of refinement.

When putting together these looks, I imagined myself walking through the grounds on a warm July afternoon – soft fabrics, classic silhouettes, and a palette that feels perfectly in tune with British summer. Here’s what I’d wear, or recommend, if you’re heading to Wimbledon (or simply in the mood for a little courtside-inspired elegance):

First, you can never go wrong with a white dress – it’s a quiet nod to tradition and always looks fresh. I love one that’s light and airy, with just enough structure to feel pulled together. Add ballet flats or slingbacks, a small woven bag, and you’re set.

Another favourite combination of mine is tailored shortswith a waistcoat. It’s modern, a little unexpected, and still perfectly polished – ideal for those who prefer something beyond a dress, but still want to look chic.

A pleated skirt and a polo t-shirt always give that preppy British feel, and it’s such an easy look to recreate. Just keep the colours soft – think white, cream, or light blue – and pair it with minimal accessories.

I also love the idea of wide-leg white trousers with a striped shirt, preferably tucked in just slightly for that relaxed, borrowed-from-the-boys vibe. It’s clean, summery, and feels very “Wimbledon without trying too hard”.

If I’m leaning into something more feminine, I’d go for a midi A-line skirtwith a crisp shirt – simple and elegant, especially when styled with a thin belt and soft leather flats.

And lastly, for a pop of colour that still feels tasteful, I’d include a floaty pink dress – something that moves beautifully in the breeze and pairs well with understated accessories. It’s playful, but still fits the moment.

Below, I’ve put together some outfit moodboards featuring all of these pieces – each one styled with shoes, bags, and accessories that capture the Wimbledon mood.

A Few Notes on What Not to Wear

While Wimbledon is far from being overly strict when it comes to dress codes, there is a certain unspoken elegance that everyone seems to respect – and it’s part of what makes the whole experience feel so special.

There are a few things I always tend to avoid, simply because they don’t quite match the tone of the day. First off, anything too casual – like oversized logos, distressed denim or activewear – feels out of place. The sporty look is best left to the players on court. I’d also skip anything too short or revealing – crop tops, mini skirts, or ultra-tight dresses never quite work in this setting.

As much as I love a good heel, stilettos or anything too high can be tricky – the grounds are mostly grass and gravel, so I always go for something more practical like ballet flats, kitten heels, or slingbacks.

In terms of colour, I tend to stay away from anything too loud – bright neons or overly flashy prints can feel a bit off when everyone else is dressed in softer, more neutral tones. Instead, pastels, whites and earthy shades always look fresh and photograph beautifully in natural light.

One final note: large tote bags or backpacks aren’t ideal – they’re bulky and take away from the polished feel. A smaller crossbody or mini bag keeps things elegant and effortless. And because British weather loves to surprise us, I never leave without a lightweight blazer or cardigan tucked into my look – just in case the breeze picks up.

In the end, Wimbledon style is all about subtlety. It’s about looking refined without trying too hard, dressing smart but staying comfortable, and choosing pieces that let you enjoy the day – matches, strawberries, champagne and all.
