Your Guide For The Perfect Tan

How I keep my skin bronzed, smooth, and glowing for weeks...

I get asked about my tan all the time – and the truth is, I’m almost always at least a little bit golden. Not because I live on a beach (if only), but because I somehow manage to escape to warmer places every couple of months. Whether it’s a quick getaway to the South of France or a work trip that happens to include sunshine, I usually find myself in the sun just enough to catch a beautiful glow. I also tan very quickly – sometimes just a couple of hours is enough for my skin to develop a noticeable colour. So yes, I know a thing or two about tanning… but more importantly, I know how to maintain that tan and keep my skin healthy while doing it.

Let’s get one thing absolutely clear before we go any further: SPF is non-negotiable. Always, always protect your skin – whether you tan easily or not. I’ve written a whole blog post about the SPFs I love and how I layer them throughout the day, so definitely have a read if you’re not yet convinced. That’s your first step, always. But today’s post isn’t about how to get a tan – it’s about what comes next. These are the products and rituals I swear by to make sure my tan lasts, my skin stays hydrated, and I have that glossy, post-holiday glow all summer long (and even into autumn).

1. Start with the Scrub

Let’s talk prep. The biggest mistake I see people make when trying to tan is skipping exfoliation. You need to start with a smooth canvas – otherwise, your tan will be uneven and fade patchily. I exfoliate my entire body 1–2 days before I know I’ll be in the sun, and I go in properly. I use a sugar-based scrub or one with crushed shells or seeds that’s gritty but still gentle. Think luxurious, not harsh.

Focus especially on areas that tend to be drier – elbows, knees, ankles, even your heels. Dead skin cells love to cling there, and they’re the reason your tan might look dull or muddy. I usually take my time with this step, play a bit of music, and turn it into a mini ritual. Exfoliating also helps your body products absorb better, which means more hydration later – and that’s key for a lasting glow.

2. Oils Before the Sun

This might be a bit unexpected, but I love using body oils before I tan. Of course, I never go out without SPF – that’s layered on top – but I find a nourishing dry oil helps keep my skin hydrated while I’m in the sun, especially in dry climates or by the sea. The oil gives that beautiful sheen on the skin, and when paired with protection, it creates the most flattering, editorial kind of glow.

I apply it generously on legs, arms, collarbones – anywhere the sun will hit. It also helps prevent that “tight” feeling you sometimes get after hours in the heat. The key is to choose an oil that absorbs well and doesn’t feel sticky. A few of my favourites also have natural tan-enhancing ingredients like carrot extract or vitamin E. They don’t replace sun protection, but they definitely make everything feel more luxurious.

3. Lotions That Love the Sun

On days when I’m spending hours outside, I avoid heavy creams that sit on top of the skin or feel greasy. Instead, I go for light, cooling lotions that hydrate without weighing me down. I’m particularly drawn to aloe vera-based formulas or anything with hyaluronic acid for that drink-of-water feel. These lotions keep my skin plump and smooth, even when exposed to heat and salt water.

The right lotion also helps even out your tan – no dry patches, no discolouration. I like to apply a generous layer after a shower, before heading out, and then again in the evening. The trick is to treat your skin as you would your face: give it love, hydration, and the right textures. If you’ve ever wondered how some people manage to look glowy even after long beach days, this is it.

4. After Sun = Everything

Post-sun care is where the magic happens. Once I’ve rinsed off the day (always using a gentle, non-stripping body wash), I immediately go in with an after-sun product. This is usually a lotion or gel packed with calming, antioxidant-rich ingredients – think aloe, chamomile, calendula, panthenol, vitamin E… all the skin-soothing heroes.

This step helps extend your tan and prevents that dreaded peeling stage that ruins everything. It also just feels amazing after a long day in the sun – like a tall glass of water for your skin. I sometimes even store my after-sun products in the fridge for an extra cooling effect. Trust me, once you try it, you’ll never go back.
