A Birthday Surprise to Remember
Some birthdays are special, but then there are birthdays that feel straight out of a movie – filled with glamour, elegance, and pure magic. This year, I was whisked away on the ultimate surprise: a journey aboard the legendary Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, travelling from Paris to Venice. This unforgettable experience was a surprise from my fiancé, Filippo, who wanted to create a memory I would cherish forever. I am incredibly grateful for his thoughtfulness and for giving me a birthday celebration beyond my wildest dreams.
If you’ve ever dreamed of stepping into the golden age of travel, this post is for you. Here’s a detailed review of my unforgettable journey, including everything you need to know if you’re planning your own adventure on this iconic train.
The Booking & Experience
The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is a luxury train service that recreates the glamour and elegance of the original Orient Express, famous for its opulent travel experience in the early 20th century. The train travels through some of Europe’s most scenic landscapes, connecting cities like Venice, Paris, and London. Passengers are treated to lavish interiors, including plush cabins and fine dining, while experiencing a journey steeped in history and romance. Known for its timeless charm and exquisite service, it offers a unique, unforgettable way to travel.
But the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is not just a train ride – it’s an experience wrapped in luxury and nostalgia. Tickets include everything from fine dining to the most impeccable service, making it the perfect way to indulge in an unforgettable adventure. If you’re considering booking, make sure to secure your tickets well in advance, as journeys often sell out months ahead.
For me, the trip was a complete surprise – one of the most thoughtful birthday gifts I could ever imagine. Departing from Paris on March 15th and arriving in Venice on March 16th, the journey turned my birthday into something truly extraordinary, blending the magic of travel with the joy of celebration.

First Impressions,
Boarding & Cabin Accommodation
Arriving at Gare de l’Est in Paris, I was immediately transported to another era. The beautifully restored 1920s carriages, the impeccably dressed staff, and the sound of a live pianist set the scene for what was to come. The check-in process was seamless, with friendly staff greeting passengers and escorting them to their cabins, creating a surreal experience reminiscent of an Agatha Christie novel or a classic Hollywood film. The cabins on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express perfectly blend old-world charm with modern comfort. With Art Deco detailing, plush velvet seating, and polished wood panelling, the cabins offer a unique atmosphere. By day, they serve as cosy lounges, while by night, they transform into sleeping compartments with crisp white linens and luxurious bedding.
We stayed in the Istanbul suite, which exuded opulence and history, with every detail – like vintage brass fittings and delicate embroidery on the pillows – paying homage to a bygone era of travel.

Dining, Culinary Delights & Onboard Atmosphere
Dining on board the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is a sensory journey in itself, with world-class chefs preparing meals using fresh, locally sourced ingredients inspired by the regions we passed through. Each meal, served in the breathtakingly elegant restaurant cars adorned with intricate glass lamps and golden lighting, added to the luxurious experience. From a four-course dinner of caviar and chocolate soufflé to a delightful breakfast of fresh pastries while gliding through the Swiss Alps, and a beautifully curated lunch featuring seasonal ingredients, every dish was a masterpiece.
The timeless elegance of the train is further enhanced by guests dressed in their finest attire, creating an atmosphere straight out of a vintage film. Whether sipping champagne in Bar Car 3674, where a pianist played classic tunes, or enjoying the serene landscapes from the cabin, the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express offers an unforgettable blend of sophistication, romance, and relaxation.

The evening before my birthday, we enjoyed a wonderful atmosphere and a delightful dinner. We danced, created memories, and at midnight, Filippo surprised me with a birthday cake. Everyone even sang me the birthday song, and I’m so grateful for this experience. I felt like I was in a movie…

Arrival in Venice & Final Thoughts
Waking up on my birthday to a stunning sunrise over the Italian countryside was a moment I’ll never forget. As we approached Venice, breakfast was served in my cabin, and we crossed the Venetian Lagoon before arriving at Santa Lucia Station. Instead of staying in Venice, we boarded another train back to Milan, where I spent the rest of the day unwinding at home in a cozy, relaxing atmosphere – the perfect ending to a dreamlike journey.
This experience was one of the most unforgettable birthday celebrations of my life. The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is more than just a train ride – it’s a step back in time, an ode to old-world luxury, and a journey unlike any other. If you ever get the chance to board this iconic train, don’t hesitate – it’s worth every moment, every detail, and every breathtaking view.

If you’re planning to embark on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express,
here are some key tips to enhance your experience:
- Dress the Part: The dress code is elegant and formal—think vintage glamour. For the evening, women should opt for cocktail dresses or gowns, while men should wear a suit or tuxedo.

For cabin luggage, pack necessary items in an overnight bag, delivered to your cabin upon check-in. Items not needed during the journey should be packed in sturdy luggage, stored in the baggage car. Limited storage allows for one piece of hand luggage, one overnight bag or suit carrier, and one suitcase, stored in the baggage car and inaccessible until your destination.
- Embrace the Atmosphere: Engage with fellow passengers, enjoy the live piano music, and soak in the luxurious setting.
- Capture the Moments: The train’s vintage interiors and scenic routes offer endless photo opportunities, so bring a camera!
- Wi-Fi: Available throughout the train, though the signal may be intermittent in rural areas. Mobile phones and devices should be used in the cabin to maintain the ambiance.
Journey Duration: Trips range from one to several days. The London-Venice route takes two days with one night onboard. - Currency: Prices are in Euros. Carry some Euros for onboard purchases, though most major currencies and credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Diners Club, JCB) are accepted.
- Languages: French, English, and Italian are spoken by most stewards.
- Children: Infants under two travel free. For more comfort, book an interconnecting cabin or Grand Suite. Children may join parents in the bar and restaurant cars at the Train Manager’s discretion.
