From Miu Miu and Toteme to COS, these lightweight funnel-neck jackets are making sporty outerwear look unexpectedly polished
I am not entirely sure when the jacket I would once have reserved for airports, long walks and questionable weather became one of the chicest things in my autumn wardrobe, but here we are.
The sporty jacket has returned, although this time it is less going for a run and more wearing Miu Miu while having absolutely no intention of exercising. The familiar practical details are still there: lightweight nylon or crisp cotton, a high collar, metal press studs, utility pockets and, quite often, a drawstring somewhere to adjust the shape. The difference is in how it is being worn.
Rather than being saved for leggings and trainers, the best sporty jackets of the season are appearing over fine knitwear, white shirts, tailored trousers and long skirts. They are relaxed without looking careless, practical without feeling overly functional and, perhaps most importantly, light enough to wear during that complicated part of the year when it is too cold to leave the house without a jacket but far too early for a proper coat.
What Exactly Is a Sporty Jacket?
You may also see it described as a funnel-neck jacket, nylon utility jacket, technical jacket or even a modern windbreaker. There are small differences between them, but the overall idea is the same.
The silhouette is usually relaxed and slightly boxy, with a raised or funnel neckline and enough volume in the sleeves to make it feel intentional. Some styles are cropped, while others finish below the hips and use an internal drawstring to create more definition around the waist.
Nylon gives the jacket its most obviously sporty finish, but I also love the versions made from structured cotton. They feel slightly less technical and are particularly easy to incorporate into an everyday wardrobe. Metal press studs, oversized pockets and concealed fastenings add interest without taking away from the clean shape.
Essentially, it is a practical jacket that has been given very good proportions.

Why It Works?
I think the appeal lies in the contrast. Autumn wardrobes can become serious very quickly: wool trousers, structured coats, loafers, dark colours and knitwear in every possible shade of beige. A lightweight sporty jacket interrupts all of that in a way that feels fresh.
It makes tailored trousers look less corporate, adds structure to a simple pair of jeans and gives a feminine skirt or dress a slightly less predictable finish. It also folds into a suitcase without occupying the entire suitcase, which, during Fashion Month, is the sort of quality I am increasingly willing to call luxury.
The funnel neck is particularly important. Worn open, it creates a relaxed frame around the face; fastened all the way up, it immediately makes the whole silhouette look sharper and more directional. It is a small detail, but one that separates these jackets from the very ordinary windbreakers currently hiding at the back of our wardrobes.
How I Would Wear It
My easiest starting point would be a slightly cropped sporty jacket with a relaxed, almost baggy fit, worn with flared jeans to balance the volume and give the silhouette more shape. Add pointed pumps and a structured bag, and what could have been a very casual combination suddenly feels polished and intentional.
For something slightly smarter, I would wear a cream or dark brown version with tailored trousers and a simple white T-shirt or shirt. I would keep the jacket relaxed rather than pulling the drawstring too tightly, and finish the look with a pointed flat, ankle boot or minimal trainer.
The most interesting combination, however, is with something feminine. A voluminous nylon jacket over a long skirt, a slip dress or a softer fabric creates exactly the sort of contrast I love. The jacket stops the outfit from feeling too precious, while the skirt makes it very clear that we are not actually on our way to the gym.
I would avoid making the entire outfit overly sporty. The reason this jacket feels so current is that it is being treated as an alternative to a trench coat or a casual blazer, rather than as activewear. One sporty element is enough; everything around it can remain clean, simple and a little more refined.
I looked for the pieces that capture this trend best: lightweight nylon and cotton jackets, cropped and oversized silhouettes, funnel necks, practical pockets and just enough detail to make them feel more polished than the average windbreaker. From Miu Miu and Toteme to some particularly good high-street finds, these are the sporty jackets I would wear now and well into autumn.
