The Chic Way To Wear Lace

From lace camisoles to slip skirts, these are the lace pieces worth buying and exactly how I style them throughout the year

There are certain trends that come back every few years, but never quite feel the same. Lace is one of them.

This season, it feels cleaner, more minimal and much easier to wear than before. Instead of looking overly romantic or overly feminine, the right lace pieces simply add texture and interest to an outfit without doing too much.

What I love most is that lace is surprisingly versatile. A camisole can work with denim in summer, tailored trousers at the office or layered under a knit once autumn arrives. A lace skirt can look just as good with flip flops in August as it does with boots and a leather jacket a few months later.

If you have been thinking about adding lace into your wardrobe but are not sure where to start, these are the pieces I would actually invest in and the styling tricks that make them feel modern rather than overly dressed up.

Start With The Lace Pieces You'll Actually Wear

If I am buying lace, I almost never go for statement pieces.

Instead, I look for wardrobe staples that happen to have lace details because they are the easiest to style and I know I will wear them for years rather than one season.

The pieces I reach for most are lace camisoles, silk camisoles finished with delicate lace trims, slip skirts with lace hems and simple dresses with lace details around the neckline or hemline.

I especially love the combination of silk and lace. It feels elegant without trying too hard and instantly makes even the simplest outfit look more considered. Whether I wear a lace camisole with relaxed jeans or layer it underneath a blazer, it always adds just enough softness without overpowering the look.

Lace Is Perfect For Transitional Dressing

One of the reasons I keep buying lace pieces is because they are not limited to one season. In summer, they work beautifully on their own with sandals and lightweight fabrics. As soon as temperatures start to drop, they become one of the easiest pieces to layer. A lace mini skirt looks effortlessly cool with an oversized leather jacket and knee-high boots. A lace camisole instantly softens a sharp tailored suit. A lace midi skirt paired with an oversized blazer creates one of my favourite autumn outfit combinations, while a lace bodysuit underneath an oversized shirt leaves just enough texture visible to make the entire look feel more interesting.

Rather than being the main focus of an outfit, lace often works best as the detail that gives it personality. It breaks up structured tailoring, softens heavier fabrics and adds depth without introducing bold colours or prints. That versatility is exactly why these pieces stay in my wardrobe long after the trend cycle moves on.

Three Styling Tricks That Always Work

Keep Your Colour Palette Simple

Lace already brings plenty of texture, so I like to keep everything else fairly minimal. Black, white, cream, brown and soft neutrals always look the most expensive and allow the details of the fabric to stand out naturally. Keeping the colour palette simple also makes lace feel far more timeless and easier to mix with the rest of your wardrobe.

Mix Different Textures

One of my favourite styling tricks is balancing delicate fabrics with something more structured. Pair lace with leather, denim, linen, cotton poplin or classic tailoring. The contrast stops the outfit from feeling overly romantic and gives it a much more modern edge. This balance is what makes lace feel wearable for everyday rather than reserved for special occasions.

Keep The Accessories Minimal

When lace is already adding texture, I rarely feel the need for statement accessories. A structured leather bag, simple jewellery and classic sunglasses are usually enough. For shoes, I almost always reach for minimalist styles such as kitten heels, sleek sandals, pumps, ballet flats or loafers depending on the season. The simpler everything else is, the more elevated the lace feels.

The Lace Pieces Worth Investing In

If I had to build a small lace capsule wardrobe, these are the five pieces I would buy first. A lace camisole is probably the hardest-working piece because it layers beautifully throughout the entire year. A lace slip skirt can be styled with knitwear, oversized shirts, simple T-shirts or blazers depending on the season. A lace midi dress works for everything from summer holidays to autumn evenings with a leather jacket. A lace blouse instantly elevates classic denim or tailored trousers, while a lace bodysuit becomes the perfect layering piece underneath shirts, blazers and oversized knitwear.

None of these pieces feel overly trend-driven, yet each of them has the ability to completely change the character of an outfit. Instead of relying on bold colours or complicated styling, lace adds interest through texture alone, making even the simplest wardrobe feel more elevated and more versatile.
