Everything to know about the design, sizes and the three Cargo Birkins in my collection
There are certain Hermès bags that immediately feel like collector’s pieces, and then there are the ones that become some of the most-used bags in your wardrobe. For me, the Cargo Birkin falls firmly into the second category.
It has everything I love about the classic Birkin: exceptional craftsmanship, beautiful proportions and that unmistakable Hermès quality. But at the same time, it feels completely different. It’s lighter, more relaxed, genuinely practical and somehow manages to look just as appropriate at the airport as it does walking around a city or heading to lunch.
Over the years I’ve ended up with three different Cargo Birkins, almost without planning to. The first was my Bleu Marine Cargo Birkin 25, which completely introduced me to the model. Last year I added the Vert Vertigo Cargo Birkin 35, and it very quickly became one of my favourite travel bags. The newest addition is my Beige Écru and Gold Cargo Birkin 25, which Filippo gave me as a wedding gift, making it one of the most special bags in my collection for reasons that go far beyond fashion.
Since I constantly receive questions about Cargo Birkins, whether they’re practical, how the two sizes compare and which one I reach for most often, I thought it was finally time to put everything into one guide.

What Makes the Cargo Birkin Different?
The Cargo Birkin was introduced in 2020 as a utility-inspired reinterpretation of the classic Birkin. Rather than being made entirely from leather, the design combines canvas with leather trim and adds a series of functional compartments to the exterior. It retains the familiar Birkin structure, handles, flap and turn-lock closure, but the final result feels noticeably more casual and contemporary.
The exterior pockets are its most recognisable feature. Instead of keeping every essential in one large central compartment, the Cargo allows smaller items to remain organised and easily accessible. Its removable cup holder has also become one of the model’s most distinctive and playful details.
It is not intended to replace the traditional leather Birkin. To me, it feels like an alternative made for a different rhythm of life: days spent walking around a city, travelling, moving between meetings or simply wanting a Birkin that does not make an outfit feel too formal.
Meet My Three Cargo Birkins
Although they share the same silhouette, I honestly think of them as three completely different bags. Each one entered my collection at a different moment, and each ended up finding its own role in my wardrobe.
My first was the Bleu Marine Cargo Birkin 25 with Noir Swift leather and Palladium hardware. It was the bag that completely changed my opinion of the Cargo design. I expected to enjoy it, but I didn’t expect to reach for it as often as I did. The darker colour combination makes it incredibly versatile, and it quickly became my go-to everyday Birkin.
A few years later came my Vert Vertigo Cargo Birkin 35. Almost immediately, it claimed the role of my favourite travel bag. The larger size is perfect for flights and long days out, and because of the canvas construction, it feels noticeably lighter than an all-leather Birkin 35 once it’s full.
The newest addition is my Beige Écru Cargo Birkin 25 with Gold Swift leather and Palladium hardware, which Filippo gave me as a wedding gift. Naturally, it has a sentimental value that none of my other bags can replace. I also love how effortlessly the neutral colours work with my wardrobe, especially during spring and summer.
Cargo Birkin 25 vs Cargo Birkin 35
After owning both sizes, I do not think one is objectively better. They serve different purposes.
The Cargo Birkin 25 is my everyday choice. It holds my phone, wallet, sunglasses, keys, lipstick and other small essentials while remaining compact and easy to carry. Its proportions feel more refined, so it can move naturally between casual daytime outfits and more polished looks.
The Cargo Birkin 35 is the one I choose for travelling, longer days or whenever I need considerably more space. The canvas construction is especially valuable in this size because it makes the bag more comfortable to carry once it is full.
Visually, the 25 gives the Cargo concept a neater, more feminine silhouette, whereas the 35 fully embraces its utilitarian character. Someone who carries only daily essentials will probably find the 25 more versatile. Someone who prefers generous bags or travels frequently may get far more use from the 35.
The Cargo Details I Actually Use
The exterior pockets are not simply decorative, although they are a major part of the bag’s visual identity. They change the way I organise what I carry.
I use them for smaller belongings that would otherwise disappear inside the main compartment. Having certain items within immediate reach is particularly helpful while travelling, when I do not want to open the entire bag every time I need something.
The removable cup holder is perhaps the most recognisable Cargo detail. I find it charming because it shows a less serious side of Hermès design, but it is not the reason I would choose the bag. For me, the real advantage is the combination of a spacious, unlined interior and the separate exterior storage. Sotheby’s documentation for the Cargo Birkin 35 also identifies the unlined interior and removable cup holder as defining construction details.
Swift leather adds structure and refinement around the handles, flap and edges, while the canvas keeps the overall design from feeling too rigid. I particularly love the contrast between these materials because it becomes more interesting as the bag is worn. The Cargo is not a style I think needs to remain completely untouched to look good. Its character suits a slightly more lived-in appearance.
How I Style My Cargo Birkins
My Bleu Marine and Noir 25 is the easiest to incorporate into my year-round wardrobe. I wear it with jeans and a blazer, black trousers, oversized shirts and darker winter layers. It adds interest through texture rather than colour, which is why it works with so many different outfits. The Vert Vertigo 35 usually accompanies my travel looks. I often wear it with a simple base of trousers or denim, a white T-shirt, knitwear or a jacket, allowing the green bag to become the main element of the outfit.
During spring and summer, the Beige Écru and Gold 25 works almost like a traditional neutral bag. I love it with white, cream, camel and pale blue, but also with relaxed denim when I want to make an everyday outfit feel a little more considered. The pockets already give the Cargo plenty of personality, so I generally keep the rest of the styling quite clean. It is one of those designs that looks best when it is allowed to be used naturally rather than treated as something too precious.
Owning three of these bags has only made me appreciate the design even more. It’s practical, distinctive and feels completely different from any other Birkin in my collection. I never find myself saving it for special occasions, which is probably the biggest compliment I can give any handbag. It’s simply a bag that gets used, travelled with and enjoyed exactly as it was intended to be. And for me, that’s what makes the Cargo Birkin such a special addition to the Hermès family.
