There is always a point towards the end of summer when real life starts quietly finding its way back into the calendar. The weather is still beautiful, the days are still long, but holidays are slowly coming to an end and suddenly there are meetings, appointments, emails and actual places we need to be before noon.

Still, I am absolutely not ready to surrender the best part of summer just because my calendar has other ideas. I want to make the most of these last long evenings, say yes when a friend suggests a spontaneous drink, catch the sunset with something cold in my hand and go for dinner without having to go home and rethink my entire outfit first.

So I started thinking about the kind of looks that can comfortably live two lives. Polished enough for whatever the daytime requires, but with just enough personality to take you straight into dinner, drinks, the cinema or a very unplanned evening that starts with “just one”. These are five outfits I would happily put on in the morning and still want to be wearing twelve hours later.

I will forever defend a matching set for days when I want to look like I made an effort without actually having to make too many decisions. Half the work is already done for you: the proportions make sense, the colours belong together and the whole thing immediately feels considered.

For this one, I would add kitten heels because they give the trousers exactly the right amount of polish while still being realistic enough to spend a full day in. The only compromise I am asking you to make is the bag. Leave the enormous day bag at home and choose something smaller that works just as well at dinner. Sunglasses, a little gold jewellery and you have an outfit that requires almost no intervention between your first coffee and your last drink.

Silk and lace together already do so much that adding too much around them almost feels unnecessary. This dress is feminine and romantic, but what I really like is that it does not need to become overly dressed-up to work later in the day.

I would actually skip heels completely and wear it with simple white ballet flats and a white bag. Add earrings or a beautiful watch and leave everything else alone. It is elegant enough for the evening without looking like you spent the entire day waiting for dinner plans to begin. Finish work, close the laptop and go directly for an Aperol with the girls. My favourite kind of commute.

If you are a corporate girl and your diary requires an actual suit, this might be the easiest day-to-night trick of them all. The suit stays exactly as it is; what matters is what you put underneath it.

Instead of the expected shirt or basic tank, choose a beautiful lace-trimmed top. During the day, button up the blazer and nobody really needs to know what is happening underneath. At six, tuck the top into the high-waisted trousers, throw the blazer over your shoulders and suddenly the lace becomes the entire point of the outfit. Add a proper heel and you are ready for dinner. I do not even mind the larger bag here – against the tailoring it looks intentional enough to belong in both versions.

Plaid is going to be everywhere this autumn, and I am already very ready for it. An oversized checked shirt with white Bermuda shorts feels like a particularly good way to start wearing the trend while it is still far too warm to think seriously about autumn clothes.

For daytime, I would keep everything easy with ballet flats. Now, could you wear exactly that to dinner? Of course. But if you want the outfit to feel completely different without changing a single piece of clothing, this is where the large tote earns its place. Put a pair of slingbacks inside before you leave home. Swap the flats for heels at the end of the day and suddenly the oversized shirt and Bermudas feel much sharper. Perfect for an easy dinner with friends, pizza somewhere outside or any plan where you want to look good without looking too done.

And finally, the one that requires no strategy whatsoever. Black silk, black lace, kitten-heel flip-flops and good jewellery. Done.

A slip skirt and lace top have enough texture to keep an all-black outfit interesting, while still being simple enough to work almost anywhere. The kitten heels make sense at three in the afternoon and at ten at night, the shoulder bag does both jobs, and a little colour from the jewellery stops everything feeling too serious. This is the outfit I would choose on the day when I know absolutely nothing about where I might end up – which, in summer, is sometimes the best kind of day.

The best day-to-night outfits are the ones that don’t require too much planning – just a few clever choices in the morning. Because summer evenings are far too good to spend going home to change.
