Hermès Shoulder Birkin Comparison: Vintage JPG vs The New Shoulder Birkin

There aren’t many bags that make me stop in my tracks anymore, but the Shoulder Birkin was one of them.

I still remember the first time I saw it. The proportions immediately felt different from anything else in my wardrobe. It had that cool east-west silhouette, slightly longer handles and an overall shape that felt incredibly modern without trying too hard. It wasn’t trying to be the next Birkin or the next Kelly. It simply had its own personality.

The first one came into my life as a gift from Filippo. It’s the newer Hermès Shoulder Birkin 29 in Ardoise, a colour that somehow never looks exactly the same twice. Sometimes it looks like the most beautiful slate grey, and other times it almost has a blue undertone depending on the light. It’s one of those colours that somehow works with absolutely everything.

Earlier this year, while vintage shopping in Tokyo, I unexpectedly found the vintage Hermès JPG Shoulder Birkin. If you’ve followed me for a while, you’ll probably know how much I love vintage shopping these days. Finding pieces that already have a story before they become part of yours is something I enjoy more than ever, and this bag was one of those finds I simply couldn’t stop thinking about.

Since then, one question keeps coming up. If I already owned one Shoulder Birkin… why did I buy another?

The answer is actually very simple. Because these two bags may share the same name, but they couldn’t feel more different.

The newer Shoulder Birkin was the bag that made me fall in love with this shape in the first place. I have the Shoulder Birkin 29, and for me, the size is one of its strongest features. It is compact enough to feel elegant and easy to carry, but still fits everything I need throughout the day without ever feeling too small.

The east-west shape is probably my favourite part of the design. I have always loved bags with a longer, more horizontal silhouette because they instantly make an outfit feel a little cooler and less expected. This one has that perfect balance between being polished and relaxed, and I genuinely think it is one of those bags that makes even the simplest look feel more considered.

The handles are also slightly longer than on a classic Birkin, which means the bag can technically be worn on the shoulder, although only just. I personally prefer carrying it in my hand because I think the proportions look much better that way. It feels more elegant and somehow suits the clean shape of the bag more naturally.

Mine is in Evercolor leather, which works beautifully with the design. The leather feels smooth and refined, and it gives the bag a polished finish without making it look too formal. Overall, I think the newer Shoulder Birkin is one of Hermès’ coolest bags in recent years. It does not feel overly classic or trend-driven, but has that effortless cool-girl energy that makes it incredibly easy to style.

Buying the vintage JPG version was never about replacing the newer bag. It was about finding a completely different interpretation of the same design.

I came across it in Tokyo and immediately loved the larger proportions. This is the bigger travel version, which is much more substantial than the Shoulder Birkin 29 and has a completely different presence. It is softer, more relaxed and much more slouchy, which is exactly what makes it so special.

Where the newer version feels clean, structured and polished, the vintage JPG feels lived in and full of character. It has that kind of softness that only comes with age and wear, and I actually think it looks better because of it. Vintage bags often have a personality that is impossible to recreate in a brand-new piece, and this one is a perfect example.

I also love the fact that I found it while travelling. There is always something more personal about a piece when it is connected to a specific city or memory, and I know I will always associate this bag with Tokyo and the excitement of finding it unexpectedly.

At first glance, both bags are clearly Shoulder Birkins, but once they are placed next to each other, the differences become very obvious.

The newer Shoulder Birkin 29 feels much more refined and architectural. Its proportions are neat, the shape is compact and the overall effect is very polished. It works especially well with tailoring, denim, oversized blazers and simple knitwear because it adds interest without overpowering the outfit.

The vintage JPG version is much more relaxed. It has a softer structure, a more oversized shape and a certain nonchalance that makes it feel ideal for travelling or for days when I want to carry more with me. It is not the kind of bag that needs to look perfect at all times. In fact, I think the slouchier and more worn-in it becomes, the better it looks.

The easiest way to explain the difference is that the newer version feels like a perfectly tailored blazer, while the vintage JPG feels like a cashmere jumper that has only become better with time.

If someone asked me which one I would recommend, I’d probably have two completely different answers.

For an everyday bag, I’d choose the newer Shoulder Birkin without hesitation. I genuinely think the proportions are perfect, I love the east-west shape and it has become one of those bags that works with almost everything I wear. It feels modern, effortless and incredibly easy to style, which is exactly what I want from a bag I reach for all the time.

The vintage JPG is a completely different story. I don’t carry it because it’s more practical or more versatile. I carry it because it has a personality that the newer version simply isn’t trying to have. It’s softer, more relaxed and somehow makes every outfit feel a little more individual. Those are the pieces I always end up keeping forever.

That’s why I’ve never really compared these bags as if one had to replace the other. They bring completely different things to my wardrobe, and honestly, that’s exactly what I love about owning both.
