How To Protect Your Hair During Summer

The habits, products and small changes that make all the difference

I am starting this blog post with a confession. When I was in my teens, I never really thought anything could happen to my hair in the sun. To be completely honest, I was not doing a particularly good job protecting my skin either. Like many of us, I was much more focused on getting a tan than on preventing damage, and hair protection was not even on my radar.

My hair would spend hours in the sun without any additional care, protection or thought. Thankfully, we all learn and evolve, and if there is one thing I know now, it is that protecting your hair is just as important as protecting your skin.

The sun, heat, UV rays, salt water and chlorine can all leave hair feeling dry, dull and damaged if we are not careful. As many of you know, my hair has always been a big part of my identity and something I genuinely enjoy taking care of. This year, perhaps more than ever, I have been focusing on keeping it healthy, strong and shiny.

Of course, I owe a lot of the improvement in my hair’s density and overall quality to my Noa Hair supplements, but maintaining healthy hair during summer requires much more than that. It is all about creating small habits that help protect it from daily damage, especially during the warmer months.

UV Protection & Beach Days

If there is one summer hair habit I would recommend to everyone, it is using UV protection for your hair.

Just like I would never leave the house without SPF on my skin, I try not to spend long periods in the sun without protecting my hair as well. Hair mists with UV protection have become a staple in my beach bag and I always apply them before heading to the beach, beach club or spending an extended period outdoors.

I also like to reapply throughout the day, especially after swimming. Whether you are in the sea or the pool, a lot of the product naturally washes away, so refreshing your hair with another light mist can make a big difference.

Another thing I rely on during summer is a good hat. Fortunately for me, I genuinely enjoy wearing oversized hats because they not only look chic, but also protect my hair, scalp and part of my face from direct sun exposure. If hats are not usually your thing, I would still encourage you to invest in at least one for summer. Your hair and scalp will thank you for it.

The Best Hair Products For Summer Travel

Summer usually means more travelling, and travelling often means additional stress for your hair. Between flights, air conditioning, different climates and frequent washing, hair can quickly start feeling dry and lacking moisture. Because of that, I always make sure I travel with a few essentials.

A nourishing shampoo, a hydrating mask, a leave-in treatment and a lightweight hair oil are products I rarely travel without. They do not need to take up much space in your suitcase, but they can completely transform the condition of your hair after a long trip.

I am also a big fan of silk scrunchies, particularly during summer. They are much gentler on the hair than traditional elastics and help minimise breakage, especially when your hair is already more vulnerable from sun exposure and swimming.

Hair Mistakes I Stopped Making

One of the biggest mistakes I used to make was simply not protecting my hair from the sun at all. Looking back, it seems obvious, but for years I focused exclusively on skincare and completely ignored my hair. Another habit I have stopped is tying my hair up tightly while it is wet. Wet hair is much more fragile and prone to breakage, so I always try to let it dry a little before putting it into a ponytail or bun.

I have also become much more mindful about heat styling. While I still enjoy a polished blow dry, I no longer feel the need to use hot tools every single day. Whenever possible, I allow my hair to air dry or embrace its natural texture. During summer in particular, I find myself reaching for simple hairstyles such as loose buns, natural curles or waves. Not only are they practical during hot weather, but they also reduce unnecessary heat damage.

Summer and winter are probably the two seasons when our hair needs a little extra attention.

If there are only two things you take away from this post, let them be hydration and sun protection. Those are, in my opinion, the two most important factors when it comes to keeping your hair healthy throughout summer. Treat your hair to a nourishing mask once a week and do not rush the process. Leave it on for an hour if you can, or even longer. Giving your hair that extra dose of hydration can make a remarkable difference over time.

And of course, protect it from the sun whenever possible. A simple UV spray, a hat or a few small preventative habits can help keep your hair healthy, shiny and strong long after summer is over.

Enjoy the sunshine, enjoy the holidays and hopefully enjoy beautiful, healthy hair all season long.
