Tokyo is one of my favourite cities in the world and honestly, every time I visit, I end up loving it even more. There is something about Japan that I have always been drawn to. The culture, the attention to detail, the aesthetics, the food, the beauty rituals, the design – everything feels incredibly intentional.
Even something as simple as stopping for a coffee somehow feels different in Tokyo.
The city has such an interesting café culture. Some places focus on speciality coffee, others on exceptional matcha, while some are simply beautiful spaces you accidentally discover while walking around the city. And somehow, all of them feel calm, considered and aesthetically pleasing without trying too hard.
If you are planning a trip and searching for the best coffee spots in Tokyo, matcha cafés worth visiting or simply beautiful places to stop between shopping and exploring, these are some of my personal favourites.
1. THE MATCHA TOKYO

If there is one thing I always look forward to in Japan, it is matcha. And while Tokyo has countless places serving it, The Matcha Tokyo feels entirely dedicated to celebrating it.
Matcha is very much at the heart of everything they do, from traditional preparations and matcha lattes to desserts and sweet treats built around it. That said, you do not have to be a matcha purist to enjoy it. The menu also includes coffee and espresso-based drinks, making it an easy stop whether you are fully committed to matcha or simply curious to try it.
What I love most is that everything feels incredibly intentional. The quality is exceptional, the flavours are beautifully balanced and you can genuinely taste the difference. Whenever I am in Tokyo, this is one of the places I find myself returning to for an iced matcha latte before spending the rest of the day exploring the city.
2. LÝFT CAFE

LÝFT is probably one of the most unexpected coffee spots on this list. Unlike traditional cafés, it sits inside the flagship space of LÝFT, one of Japan’s best-known fitness and lifestyle brands. The concept combines a gym, retail space and café, creating a slightly different atmosphere from your typical Tokyo coffee stop.
I originally stopped by because I was curious about the space itself, but ended up loving the café. The menu focuses on matcha, speciality coffee and protein smoothies, making it the perfect stop after a workout or a morning spent exploring Omotesando. It feels modern, energetic and very reflective of Tokyo’s growing wellness culture.

3. NUMBER SUGAR

Number Sugar is one of those places that perfectly captures everything I love about Tokyo. It is simple, beautifully designed and somehow manages to make even the smallest details feel special.
While it is best known for its handmade caramels, I always enjoy stopping here for a coffee and a sweet treat while exploring Omotesando. The caramels are made fresh every day and each flavour is identified only by a number, which has become part of the brand’s charm.
The space itself is exactly what I imagine when I think of modern Japanese design – clean, understated and incredibly thoughtful. It also happens to be one of my favourite places in Tokyo for gifts. The packaging is beautiful and every box feels like something you genuinely want to bring home for friends and family.
If you are spending the day in Omotesando, this is the perfect little stop for a coffee break between shopping and wandering through the neighbourhood.
4. CAFÉ KITSUNÉ

Café Kitsuné is one of my favourite café concepts in the world and a place I almost always visit when I am travelling. Whether I am in Paris, London or Tokyo, I somehow find myself stopping by for coffee.
Created by the French-Japanese lifestyle brand Maison Kitsuné, the café combines two cities I love: Paris and Tokyo. The aesthetic is beautiful, the atmosphere always feels relaxed and, most importantly, the coffee is genuinely excellent.
While many people first discover Café Kitsuné through fashion, I keep coming back because the coffee is consistently good. Whenever I am in Tokyo, it is one of those familiar places I never skip.
5. MATSUBAYA SARYO

Matsubaya Saryo offers a completely different side of Tokyo’s café culture. Hidden away in Minami-Aoyama, it feels more like a quiet retreat than a busy city café.
The interiors are beautiful, the atmosphere is incredibly calm and everything feels centred around slowing down and enjoying the experience. It is one of those places that immediately makes you forget how busy Tokyo can be. If you are looking to experience a more traditional and thoughtful side of Japanese tea culture, this is easily one of the most memorable stops on the list.

6. THE CLOUD CLUB

The Cloud Club is one of the newer additions to Tokyo’s café scene and a place I kept seeing recommended before my trip. Naturally, I had to see what all the hype was about.
The space feels very modern and distinctly Tokyo, with clean interiors, beautifully presented drinks and a strong focus on matcha. While it has become incredibly popular on social media, it still feels focused on quality rather than simply being photogenic. If you enjoy discovering newer café concepts alongside some of Tokyo’s more established favourites, this is definitely one worth adding to your list.

7. ATELIER MATCHA

If there is one place that feels entirely dedicated to matcha, it is Atelier Matcha. Everything here revolves around it, from beautifully prepared drinks to desserts that somehow manage to look almost too pretty to eat.
I love that the experience feels a little more elevated than many of the matcha cafés you come across in Tokyo. The space is calm, beautifully designed and allows the quality of the tea to speak for itself. Whether you stop by for a quick matcha latte or decide to stay for one of their desserts, it is the kind of place that makes you appreciate why Japanese matcha is so highly regarded around the world.
