Wedding Guest Dresses I’d Actually Wear This Summer

Wedding-Guest-Outfit-Ideas

romantic, elegant and actually wearable wedding guest dresses

I actually feel more inside the whole wedding world than ever this year, considering I will be a 2026 bride myself. But before becoming “the bride”, I spent years being on the guest side of weddings too – dressing for summer ceremonies, black tie celebrations, destination weddings and all those beautiful weekends dedicated to love and people you care about most.

And since this summer also includes quite a few weddings of our close friends, I thought it felt appropriate to bring back this post once again.

If you recently joined my Substack, you may have already seen that one of the topics that unexpectedly started a very entertaining discussion over there was actually what not to wear to someone else’s wedding. From dresses that feel a little too bridal to outfits that perhaps belong more at a beach club than a ceremony, we covered quite a lot. I will leave that post linked HERE for those of you who want to read it because the conversation in the comments became genuinely hilarious at certain points.

But today, I wanted to continue with the opposite side of the story: the dresses I personally think always work beautifully for summer weddings.

Not necessarily the loudest dresses in the room. Not the dresses designed purely for one Instagram photo and forgotten forever afterwards. Just elegant, feminine pieces that feel romantic, timeless and genuinely wearable.

Soft Pastels Somewhere In Italy

There is a reason soft pastel dresses return every single summer wedding season. Butter yellow, baby blue, blush pink, soft pistachio shades and muted peach tones instantly feel romantic and elegant, especially during summer evenings with sun-kissed skin and golden jewellery.

I also think pastel tones manage to look very feminine without feeling overly dramatic, which is personally always my favourite balance for wedding guest dressing.

Flowy fabrics, softer silhouettes and delicate details work especially beautifully within this colour palette, and somehow always look expensive even when the dress itself is actually very simple.

The Black Formula That Never Fails

I know black at weddings always becomes a discussion at some point, but personally, I think an elegant black dress is almost impossible to get wrong – especially for evening celebrations or black tie dress codes.

A beautiful black silhouette always feels sophisticated, polished and timeless. Sometimes the simplest option truly ends up looking the most elevated in the room.

I also love that black dresses allow you to play more with accessories, whether that means statement earrings, a bold heel or a beautiful evening bag. And honestly, when in doubt, black almost always works.

The one where you are the +1

Some of the best wedding guest dresses are usually the ones that do not try too hard to look like “wedding guest dresses” at all. Cleaner lines, softer colours and simpler silhouettes almost always feel much chicer to me than something overly dramatic.

These are the kinds of dresses that work perfectly when you are the +1. Elegant and polished without demanding all the attention in the room. And usually, they are also the dresses you end up wearing again throughout summer.

Styled differently, they work just as well for elegant dinners, birthdays or holidays with flat sandals and an oversized blazer thrown over your shoulders.

The One Shoulder Obsession

I have also been noticing so many beautiful one shoulder dresses lately, and honestly, I completely understand why this silhouette keeps returning every summer season. There is something incredibly elegant about showing just one shoulder. It feels modern, flattering and feminine without looking overly complicated or trying too hard.

Whether it is a longer flowing dress for a destination wedding or a more structured evening silhouette for a black tie celebration, this style somehow always feels polished and elevated. It is probably one of my personal favourite dress shapes at the moment.

Where You Do Not Want To Show Your Arms

There are also moments when I simply do not feel like wearing something completely sleeveless, especially for weddings that begin in a church or take place somewhere a little more traditional where a slightly more covered look feels more appropriate. And honestly, I think some of the chicest wedding guest dresses are often the ones that reveal a little less.

Soft sleeves, sheer fabrics or a lighter long sleeve silhouette can feel incredibly graceful without losing that summery feeling. A beautiful long sleeve dress moving softly in the wind during golden hour will always feel incredibly cinematic to me. Slightly old-world, very elegant, and somehow even more memorable than the obvious option.

The Dress Alternatives

As much as I love a beautiful dress, I also think wedding guest dressing becomes far more interesting once you stop limiting yourself to only dresses. Sometimes the chicest option in the room is actually a perfectly elegant set, a tailored suit with heels or a long skirt paired with a top that fits beautifully together.

A soft satin skirt with jewellery and delicate sandals, or a lighter summer suit styled with pointed heels and simple accessories, can feel just as polished as a gown. Especially for city weddings or events where you want something slightly more fashion-forward without looking overdressed.

And honestly, I will always love an outfit that feels a little unexpected in the best possible way.

Wedding guest dressing has definitely changed over the years. I think most of us are becoming less interested in overly complicated outfits and more drawn to pieces that simply feel elegant, effortless and beautiful to wear.

And honestly, that is probably the formula I will always come back to.
