Best Coffee Shops In New York: My Favourite SoHo & Uptown Spots

Your guide to where to drink good coffee in New York - from SoHo fashion cafés to classic uptown spots

Coffee in New York has never really been just coffee. If you grew up watching Sex and the City like I did, you probably remember how even the simplest catch-up over a drink somehow felt like an entire event. A quick coffee before shopping, sitting outside somewhere in SoHo people-watching for an hour, running into friends between meetings, grabbing something iced while walking through the city… somehow all of it feels very cinematic in New York.

And honestly, that is probably why I love the coffee culture there so much. The city is full of beautiful little spots that become part of your day without even planning it. Some are tiny cafés hidden inside fashion stores, some are classic New York institutions, some are perfect for a quick matcha stop between shopping, and some simply make you want to slow down for a second and enjoy the atmosphere around you.

I usually spend most of my time in SoHo when I am in New York, so naturally many of my favourite coffee places are there. It is the area I know best, the one I always end up walking through, shopping in, meeting friends in and returning to over and over again. But there are also a few spots outside downtown that I think are genuinely worth adding to your list if you love discovering the city through places that feel stylish, easy and very New York.

1. Buck Mason / Fast Times Coffee

Address: 486 Broadway, New York, NY 10013
Best for: coffee and shopping in one stop
What to order: iced latte or matcha
Vibe: relaxed, minimal, effortlessly cool
Good to know: the café is located inside the Buck Mason store.

This is exactly the kind of New York spot I love finding. You walk into what looks like a beautiful clothing store and suddenly there is a really good coffee counter hidden inside. The whole space feels very calm compared to the energy outside on Broadway, which honestly makes it such a nice little escape in the middle of SoHo.

I also love that this place does not feel overly touristy or “made for TikTok”. It still feels cool and understated in a very New York way. Perfect for a quick coffee stop between shopping or before walking around the rest of SoHo for the afternoon.

Café Leon Dore

Address: 214 Mulberry St, New York, NY 10012
Best for: downtown coffee energy and people watching
What to order: Freddo Cappuccino
Vibe: fashion crowd, polished, very Nolita
Good to know: the café is connected to the Aimé Leon Dore flagship store.

If there is one café that perfectly captures that cool downtown New York energy everyone romanticises, it is probably Café Leon Dore. Part of the Aimé Leon Dore universe, the space feels polished and considered without trying too hard. You come here as much for the atmosphere as for the coffee itself.

I especially love this stop in the morning, before SoHo becomes too busy. There is always a mix of fashion people, locals, tourists and someone casually walking out with three shopping bags and an iced coffee. Very New York.

Blank Street Coffee

Address: 63 Spring St, New York, NY 10012
Best for: quick coffee or matcha on the go
What to order: iced matcha or cold brew
Vibe: easy, modern, busy city energy
Good to know: yes, it is a chain, but still one of the easiest reliable coffee stops in the city.

Blank Street is everywhere now and I know some people immediately avoid places once they become too popular online, but honestly? Sometimes you just want a good coffee without turning it into a whole production. And Blank Street is genuinely convenient when you are spending the day walking around downtown. I also always end up going there in London too, which probably says enough about how reliable and easy it is.

The Spring Street location is especially ideal because it sits right in the middle of everything. It is one of those places where you quickly stop for an iced coffee, continue shopping five minutes later and somehow still feel like you are fully living your New York movie moment.

Sporty & Rich Café

Address: 133 Greene St, New York, NY 10012
Best for: wellness-meets-fashion coffee stops
What to order: coffee or fresh juice
Vibe: clean, sporty, fashion-girl energy
Good to know: this is part café, part fashion flagship.

Sporty & Rich feels less like a classic café and more like stepping into an entire lifestyle aesthetic. Everything from the interiors to the branding feels very curated and intentional, which makes sense if you already know the brand.

I love stopping here when I want something light and quick while walking around Greene Street. It has that very specific SoHo energy where fashion, wellness and coffee culture all somehow blend together into one thing. Even if you only stop for ten minutes, it still feels like part of the whole downtown experience.

Francesco Soho

Address: 470 Broome Street, entrance on Greene St, New York, NY 10013
Price range: $$
Best for: pastries, coffee and a lighter Italian-style brunch
What to order: pastries, jambon beurre, avocado toast with smoked salmon
Vibe: chic, low-key, hidden-gem energy
Good to know: a lovely option if you want something calmer than the classic Soho brunch crowd

Francesco feels softer and quieter compared to some of the more fashion-focused places on this list, which is exactly why I wanted to include it. Sometimes in New York you want the cool downtown energy, and sometimes you simply want a good pastry and a slower coffee moment before the day starts properly.

There is something very comforting and easy about this place. Nothing feels overly staged or too trendy, which honestly becomes refreshing in SoHo after a while. I also included this spot in my NYC brunch guide because I genuinely think it is such a lovely option for a slower breakfast or light brunch in the city.

Ralph’s Coffee

Address: 888 Madison Ave, New York, NY 10021
Best for: classic uptown New York coffee moments
What to order: cappuccino or iced latte
Vibe: elegant, polished, classic New York
Good to know: located on Madison Avenue next to Ralph Lauren.

Ralph’s Coffee feels like a completely different side of New York compared to downtown. If SoHo feels cool and fast-moving, Ralph’s feels polished, timeless and very Upper East Side.

I honestly do not think I could ever get tired of this place. The green cups, the branding, the Madison Avenue location, people walking around in blazers and loafers… it somehow feels exactly like the New York people imagine before they visit for the first time. And somehow, it still lives up to it.

Maman

Address: 375 Hudson St, New York, NY 10014
Best for: slower mornings, matcha and pastries
What to order: matcha latte, croissants and coffee
Vibe: cosy, feminine, French-inspired
Good to know: Maman has multiple locations across New York, but this downtown spot is one of my favourites

Maman is probably the prettiest café on this list in the most classic sense of the word. It has that charming French-inspired atmosphere that makes you want to sit a little longer, order another coffee and pretend you are not in a rush for once.

I especially love it for slower mornings when I want an actual sit-down coffee instead of grabbing something on the go. The interiors are beautiful, the pastries are genuinely good and the whole place has that soft romantic energy New York somehow does so well. Also, their matcha latte is genuinely very good and one of my favourites to order there.

One of my favourite things about New York is that the city always gives you a reason to stop somewhere. Sometimes it is for shopping, sometimes for a meeting, sometimes simply because your feet hurt after walking all day. But somehow coffee stops become part of the entire experience there.

And maybe that is exactly why I always end up remembering cafés in New York so vividly. Not just because of the coffee itself, but because of the streets around them, the conversations, the outfits, the energy and the feeling that for an hour or two, you were fully part of the city.
