Balenciaga Le City Bag: Then and Now

/balenciaga-le-city-bag-review

Everything That Still Makes The City Feel Special

I still remember exactly how much I wanted my first Balenciaga Le City. Not in a wishlist way. Not in a one day way. I mean properly wanted it. The kind of bag you save for. Calculate around. Mentally style with every single thing in your wardrobe before you have actually pressed buy. I even remember still to this date how much it was.

When I finally got it, it became part of me almost immediately. Thrown over the shoulder, half undone, full of things I should have taken out a week ago. I never treated it as precious. That, in retrospect, is the entire point of Le City. It is a bag built to be lived in. Treat it like an heirloom and you have already missed the joke.

Back then, Le City had a very specific energy. It was everywhere  and somehow never felt forced.Remember the little mirror it came with? Genius. Low-rise denim. Oversized sunglasses. The layered camis we have collectively agreed not to talk about. Off-duty. Slightly disheveled. The bag of a woman who had somewhere to be and was emphatically not rushing to it. I carefully thought about the colour and landed on the one pictured below called Papyrus.

And then, as fashion does, the wind changed. Silhouettes tightened. Lines cleaned up. The mood went heavier on tailoring, lighter on mess. I didn’t fall out of love with Le City. It simply slipped out of the rotation without my noticing, the way an ex you parted well with stops appearing in your photographs(and unlike the bag hopefully never makes a come back).

Lately, though, I have been thinking about it again. And I am not the only one. The City has been reappearing but in a tone that is completely different from the first time around.

The Return of the City

What is interesting about Le City right now is that it has not tried to reinvent itself. It has done the harder thing. It has grown up.

There is something about the current fashion landscape that makes it make sense again. We are dressing more relaxed: sharp tailoring, minimal layers, the kind of silhouettes that look better with one slightly imperfect element.Le City has always been that imperfect element. It does not scream. It textures. Pun intended because the cracked leather I usually gravitate towards really gives it that exacta relaxed fee.

A Closer Look

The new Le City keeps the signatures. Slouchy shape. Braided top handles. Front zipped pocket. The long leather pullers I am, frankly, sentimental about. Detachable shoulder strap. Anyone who has owned one will recognise it on sight. All the things that made it special.

What is different is the way it has been brought back. Several sizes from a smaller everyday version to a medium that sits closest to the original proportions  and a more considered range of finishes, including Arena lambskin, suede, and updated colourways. The leather still arrives with that lived-in texture (which, for the record, is the bag a stiff Le City is a contradiction in terms). The shape, however, feels cleaner. A little more polished. Easier to wear with a modern wardrobe. This tiny version almost makes it feel different (for reference this is not even tiny, its the medium size).

It is still not a “perfect” bag. I mean that as the highest compliment I give. It softens. Collapses. Moves with you. Which is precisely why it works again. I throw it in my luggage and it arrived imperfectly perfect on the other side.

How I’d Wear It Now

The biggest shift, for me, is the styling.

Where I used to wear it with very of-the-moment looks, I would now do the opposite. I’d put it against clean tailoring. A simple shirt. Straight-leg denim. Pieces structured enough to push back against the softness of the bag, so the contrast does the work.

I love the idea of it with all-black, the leather doing the talking. Or with a crisp white shirt and tailored trousers  minimal, restrained, the City the only thing in the picture allowed to be a little undone. For me this is a perfect bag for the ultimate NY or LA girl, the one that came home at 5am, and is heading to work with her Le City, on time.

It is no longer the centre of the outfit. It is the piece that lets everything else breathe.

Is It Worth It Today?

Le City makes sense now for one specific reason. It does not feel like a trend anymore.

It sits, instead, somewhere between nostalgic and timeless. The vintage versions carry the original character  that lived-in mid-2000s soul. The new ones are a touch more polished, just as wearable, arguably more versatile. Both work. The price tag? Maybe even more acceptable now then it was then, it kept its price range reasonable, considering the todays pricing of designer bags.

This is not a bag for everyone. If you live for hard structure, sharp hardware, pristine corners, something to put your notebook in Le City will not love you back. But if you are drawn to leather that ages, shapes that move, and outfits that are not overly considered, it is one of those bags that gets along with almost everything in your wardrobe.

And that, for me, is exactly why it feels right again.
