There are certain places in the world that stay with you long after you’ve left – and for me, Belmond Splendido in Portofino is one of them. I’ve had the privilege of staying here more than once, and every time I return I fall in love all over again. It isn’t just a hotel; it’s a state of mind, a little corner of la dolce vita that feels both impossibly glamorous and deeply comforting.

What makes Splendido truly extraordinary is its setting. Perched on the hillside above Portofino, the hotel looks down over pastel houses, bobbing yachts and the sparkling Ligurian Sea. Waking up to that view – framed by lush gardens and the soft Mediterranean light – is something I’ll never forget.

Portofino itself is a gem. Small enough to wander in a morning, yet brimming with charm – cobbled piazzas where locals sip espresso, boutiques tucked inside historic buildings, restaurants spilling onto the harbour. But truthfully, I often find myself so enchanted by the view from the pool terrace that I never want to leave.

The pool at Splendido deserves its own mention. Set against a backdrop of palm trees and overlooking the bay, it’s one of the most breathtaking spots I’ve ever swum in. There’s an effortless glamour here – the kind of place where you lounge with a book, order a fresh cocktail, and lose track of time entirely. For me, this is the ultimate indulgence: floating in the pool while gazing out at Portofino’s perfect harbour.

There’s a reason why artists, royals and travellers have been coming here for decades. Splendido captures a rare mix of history, beauty and intimacy. It’s a hotel, yes, but it’s also a feeling – of slowing down, of savouring life, of appreciating the simple luxury of a moment well lived.
