Day or Weekend Escape
As soon as spring begins to bloom in Milan – with the first warm breeze and longer days -I feel an irresistible pull toward Lake Como. It’s become my go-to escape, a place that calls me every free weekend from early spring through summer. Sometimes it’s just a quick day trip with Filippo, other times we stay the whole weekend, soaking in the calm, the sunlight, and the slow rhythm of lakeside life. After so many visits, I’ve come to know every corner, and today I’m sharing my absolute favourite hotels and restaurants – from casual lunches to restful weekend hideaways.
Arriving from Milan is incredibly easy – and I always recommend driving if you can. Having a car gives you freedom to hop between charming towns and hidden views. Yes, there’s a train option too, but stations aren’t always close to hotels, and you’ll likely need a taxi.
1. Villa d’Este
This iconic hotel is like something from a dream, combining historic charm with timeless elegance. Even if you’re not staying overnight, it’s well worth visiting for a long lunch or romantic dinner. The gardens are manicured perfection, the architecture grand but inviting, and the entire property feels serene yet luxurious. If you’re booking a table, always ask for a seat outdoors by the waterfront – the view alone is worth the visit. The menu offers classic Italian fine dining, and everything from the wine list to the dessert is top-tier.

2. Grand Hotel Tremezzo
A personal favourite, especially for daytime lounging. This hotel offers a unique “beach” setup with direct lake access, sunbeds, umbrellas, and that retro-luxury vibe. The beautiful lakeside area is perfect for relaxing and soaking up the sun. Food-wise, it never disappoints. My go-to dish here is the pasta pomodoro – simple, flavourful, and perfectly prepared. Even if you’re not staying at the hotel, you can still book a table for lunch and enjoy the sunshine along with the stunning lake views.

3. Mandarin Oriental, Lake Como
A haven of calm and luxury. Nestled in lush greenery, the setting is postcard-perfect, and the service is next-level – from the moment you arrive to the final espresso. I love starting my mornings here with coffee by the pool, and honestly, the view never gets old. The hotel offers a sense of privacy and calm that’s rare to find, and every corner is beautifully designed. The restaurant offers modern Italian cuisine with seasonal ingredients, and if you get the chance – stay the night. It’s the kind of place that redefines “relaxation.”

4. Passalacqua
This one truly feels like a fairytale. The grounds are stunning – think manicured gardens, vintage fountains, and picture-perfect views at every turn. Every detail in this hotel is carefully chosen, creating a warm and elegant atmosphere. Whether you’re visiting for lunch or staying overnight, you’ll feel like you’re in a romantic film. I usually stop here for a slow lunch, and their pastas – especially the light, creamy ones – are always a hit. It’s refined without being stuffy, and the entire experience feels thoughtful and intimate.

Must‑Do: Boat Ride on Lake Como
You can’t visit Lake Como without a boat ride. Whether it’s a private tour – ranging from about €300 to €800 depending on duration and boat type – or a shared tour that’s more budget‑friendly, the experience is magical. You’ll glide past historic villas and hidden coves while soaking up fascinating stories and breathtaking views. Most tour guides will share interesting facts and point out the unique architecture lining the shores, making the ride as informative as it is beautiful.
Depending on where you’re staying, your hotel may be able to organize the boat ride for you, or you can easily book through various online platforms.

This guide is my love letter to Lake Como – perfect for anyone planning one‑day trip or relaxing weekend getaway.
