Margaux Getting Discontinued?! Here Are The Best Alternatives

The-Row-Margaux-Bag-Alternatives

Is it really so?!?

Every few years or so, a bag comes along that completely shakes up the fashion world in the best way possible. And us bag lovers have rarely seen a shakeup in the realm of designer accessories quite like The Row Margaux bag’s entrance, dominance and now (*rumoured*) discontinuation. Speculation that The Row were discontinuing production of the Margaux bag began to bubble at the start of the year which, of course, sent fashion folk into a frenzy (who could blame us?!). And while nothing is confirmed, it feels like fans of the bag are all collectively preparing for the worst.

Dubbed the next Birkin by fans and critics alike, The Row’s Margaux bag was first released back in 2018, instantly becoming a cult classic. But the design’s popularity reached an all-time high last year in 2024. As a logoless leather spacious and slouchy carryall, on the surface, nothing about the Margaux seemed revolutionary. But, as is so often the case with accessories that manage to enthrall the luxury fashion community, it’s the Margaux’s masterful simplicity that continues to fuel the bag’s evergrowing allure and subsequent sky-high demand.

It came about at such an interesting time for fashion. Back when The Row first launched the Margaux, the industry cared about bags that made a statement – micro designs and logo-clad picks routinely topped wishlists. But in the years since, we’ve moved away from this in favour of understated statements. And yes, while there’s no doubt that the quiet luxury phenomen played a part in the Margaux’s dominance within the luxury bag market, the Margaux is so much more than simply a product of this style movement. At its core, The Row Margaux bag is all about ease. The need for trends, logos and a USP (unique selling point) all seem to melt away when you sling the straps over your shoulder and head out the door. It’s the bag for cool girls who are growing up. It’s why I have several in my collection.

Is it really gone?!?

Here’s all we know. The fashion rumour mill began to swirl on social media towards the start of the year that The Row Margaux was being discontinued and last month news of this was heavily reported in the fashion media. But it’s important to note that NOTHING. HAS. BEEN. CONFIRMED. At the moment it’s all speculation. No news is good news … right??

While I always welcome optimism, it’s important we be practical here (as the Margaux’s design would encourage) and prepare ourselves for the eventuality that this ‘It’ bag’s enduring reign has come to an end. There is some indication though that the rectangular East-West version could still be available – so this is a bit of good news we can cling to. And, of course, as soon as I get wind of anything you guys will be the first to know!

Too Much Of A Good Thing?

While so many of us have been left utterly perplexed at the news of the Margaux’s possible discontinuation, others are proclaiming that it’s hardly surprising. As a brand, The Row has always been about under-the-radar elegance and exclusivity. So could it be the case that The Row’s Margaux bag simply got too popular for its own good. As those of us who play the Hermès game will know, severely restricting supply is the most proven way to create scarcity and demand that lasts for decades.

The Alternatives

The silver lining to all of this? There’s no shortage of alternatives to choose from if you’re already in need of a Margaux-style pick me up. Here are some of my top recommendations.

Magda Butrym Brigitte

This spacious carryall was practically glued to my arm this past Fashion Month. It’s got a rectangular boxy shape so is a little more structured than the Margaux but still pretty relaxed overall. I love carrying it by the handle or in the crook of my arm but it could also work as a shoulder bag. The brown suede version is just so dreamy and the flower charms made from leather add a fun touch that’s very on-brand for Magda Butrym.

Bottega Veneta Andiamo

Bottega Veneta’s Andiamo is set to be one of the biggest bags of the year – and I’m not referring to the size. This design really is the true definition of a carryall. Separated into two compartments with an ever-so-slightly accordion-style construction, it’s plenty practical – the Margaux would be proud. Plus, one of the best things about the Andiamo that isn’t shared with most other spacious totes (The Row’s Margaux included) is that it’s got a top handle as well as a longer strap to carry on your shoulder.

Khaite Maeve

This beauty was dubbed a perfect alternative to The Row Margaux long before speculation about it being discontinued so it’s definitely a great pick if you’re looking for something very similar. It’s boxy like the Magda Butrym Brigitte and has smaller options which are so adorable and collectable thanks to the delectable assortment of colour options.

Prada Medium Leather Tote

So much love is given to the Margaux’s larger sizes but if you’re most upset about missing out on the smaller options (like the Margaux’s 10 or 12 size) then this pick from Prada is the perfect alternative. It’s on the more structured side owing to its compact size and I love the belt details on either side that give it a very Margaux feel.

DeMellier Midi New York

A big talking point of the Margaux bag that at times made the style feel very polarising was the high price tag despite its minimalist design. So I thought it would be useful to include a mid-range option, and, in my opinion, DeMellier’s Midi New York is the best out there. This tote is already a cult classic but I’ve found myself looking at it in another light since rumours of the Margaux’s discontinuation arose. It too champions the quiet allure of a simple open-top tote (but for a much more affordable price).

The Row Marlo

The Row’s decision to release a new spacious and slouchy minimalist tote, the Marlo, has only added fuel to the burning fire of the Margaux’s discontinuation rumours. But in the spirit of giving credit where credit is due, The Row Marlo makes a great alternative to its predecessor. With a similar slouchy structure and open top, it’s got the same elements that help make the Margaux so popular, plus flexible wide sides to give it an even roomier interior.
