And Where To Shop Them ...
The Milan fashion scene is undoubtedly going through a period of change for Autumn/Winter 2025. It was the first season since Creative Directors of several of Italy’s biggest fashion houses have stepped down (we were seeing Gucci sans Sabato De Sarno and Fendi sans Kim Jones). But it was also undoubtedly a time of celebration. Fendi’s show was in honour of the house’s 100-year anniversary. There was an unbelievably cool roster of celebrities commanding the runways of so many brands. Plus, plenty of noteworthy displays of style served as a love letter to the city. And this joy definitely translated to the clothes showcased.
There was no shying away from going all out on the statement factor. It signalled the triumphant return of LOUD luxury (and I’m not mad about it). Plus, we saw sophisticated takes on cult-favourite retro trends and brands eager to indulge in trying different things this season. So let’s break down the top seven trends to know (and shop) now.
First … Fur
Fur, whether of the real or faux variety, was everywhere on the MFW runways this AW25 season. Gucci, stepping away from De Sarno’s sleek take on the Gucci girl going casual, banked big on fur looks. Pairing statement fur coats with silk and lace layers underneath, plus big ‘70-style glasses for a slew of sexy looks that seemed to blur the lines of multiple iconic decades within fashion. There was a fur layer over a trench coat that I particularly loved.
Other Italian labels joined in on this fur obsession, too. There were the brands you’d expect (Fendi, with its famous FF logo rumoured to stand for Fendi Fur), plus fur details from the likes of Max Mara, Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, Ferragamo, and Jil Sander. Think contrast fur shoulders, lapels and sleeves, plus shaggy fur dresses and more.

Hello, LOUD Luxury
Speaking of statement, the overwhelming message from the Milan runways was that loud luxury is back. Despite Italian labels being among the most notable pioneers of the wildly popular quiet luxury movement, Milan this season proved that the Italians really can do it all. From hanging chain jewellery plus an excess of silk and lace at Gucci, to fun metallic details at Versace and Jil Sander, and a show of leopard print love at Versace. These were looks meant to be seen and heard.

Let’s Circle Back To Circle Hems
A wonderfully whimsical and, if you ask me, notoriously underutilised design feature, circle hems proved one of the most fun trends on the Milan runways this season. A circle hem essentially means that the hemline of a skirt or dress is shaped to a perfect circle. This style feels like a fresh take on the skater skirt phenomenon of the mid-2010s that so many of us remember fondly as a playfully feminine silhouette. At Versace, these were very structured as part of black velvet-looking dresses with the house’s signature Baroque print on the interior. And over at Fendi, coats were given the circle hem treatment.

Ruffle Peplums
Another fun revival trend reemerging from the 2010s is peplums, this time complete with plenty of ruffles courtesy of Versace and Fendi. Instantly making looks feel lighter, I can see this becoming a huge ready-to-wear trend over the next few seasons. There are definitely some clear comparisons with the bubble hem trend (they’re both ultra-feminine, inspired by the 2010s and create a similar babydoll aesthetic). Looking at the wild success brands found with the bubble hem trend, it’s easy to see why they’re eager to embrace the return of peplums.

A Return To Glamour
The pendulum of fashion appears to have swung once more and now brands are embracing the overt glamour and opulence of style. No brand understood this assignment more than Gucci. There was no shortage of sparkle but one of my favourite standout looks from the show was a low scoop-neck grey velvet catsuit patterned with a sparkly version of Gucci’s monogram print and the signature Horsebit buckle creating a belt at the waist. If this isn’t new-age glamour, I don’t know what is!
Max Mara’s approach to glamour felt a little more refined, choosing to channel dark feminine energy with a black ribbed-knit catsuit worn with a square-neck velvet tank, plus leather belt and elbow-length gloves. These accessories were also worn with a black turtleneck knit and baggy wide-leg velvet trousers to channel a similar effect. Glamour for when you’re en route to the office, if you will.

Balloon Sleeves
Tying in nicely with fashion’s return to louder, more statement looks, balloon sleeves were seen at several shows. Loro Piano, Fendi and Versace presented this statement silhouette in a mix of bejewelled tweed, pleated leather and a light sheer material, while at Ferragamo, balloon sleeves took on a more subtle shape.

Indie Sleaze
This 2010s cult fashion trend has been brewing for a while. Indie sleaze, with its characteristically messy look that blends punk-ish details with more feminine cropped dresses, light fabrics and fur layers. Dolce & Gabbana did this expertly, using a beanie, chain belt and biker-style accessories to finish a sheer lace-trimmed silk mini cami dress and fur coat look. Jil Sander opted for a super grown-up take on this styling phenomenon, teaming sheer fabrics with oversized jackets and punk-inspired elements like chunky leather boots and spiky jewellery.
