Here’s How To Master The Espresso Makeup Trend

There's a new way to take your morning coffee

Everyone began using Sabrina Carpenter’s Espresso chart topper sound on TikTok, then autumn began and we saw chocolate brown take over as the ‘It’ colour of the season. When you combine this with the Gilmore Girls-level coffee obsession that we all seem to have – is it a big shocker that espresso makeup is THE beauty trend of AW24? Of course not. I, like the rest of you guys, can’t get enough of the rich brown shades and sexy smoky eye look. It’s been described as the cool grunge sister of latte makeup (another cult-favourite beauty phenomena) and is actually a lot easier to achieve than it looks. So let’s get into how to ace the makeup that promises to give us our morning boost.

Eyeliner

You can use a mix of black and brown eyeliners to create the base for the espresso smoky eye look. Start with the brown and just roughly draw on about half of your lid, then blend this out over your whole lid and also your lower lid. When it comes to adding black eyeliner on top, you can be as subtle or as bold as you want. I like to be a little bolder because I think that this rich espresso-themed hue lends itself well to a more intense eye look. Charlotte Tilbury’s Double Ended Liner is great if you want to add a subtle metallic shimmer.

Eyeshadow

The blended out brown eyeliner gives you a good base but now we need a little more pigment and shimmer. And if you’re afraid of going too heavy with the brown eyeliner – I’ve got you. Ease up on liner and instead focus on the eyeshadow. Use a rich brown shade, blending it up to your brow, and I love adding a shimmery bronze tone on top for a little something extra. An eyeshadow stick can make the application easier – Laura Mercier’s Caviar Stick Eyeshadow Shimmer in the shade Mocha is a great choice.

Lips

Now onto my favourite part – the lips. A darker lip liner is perfect for this makeup look – my top recommendation is the Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat Lip Liner in the shade Pillow Talk Intense for something a little bolder and more espresso-themed than I usually go. You want the end result to be a rich brown tint with a nude undertone. A matte finish works nicely for this but I prefer a glossy final layer – Rhode’s Peptide Lip Tint in the aptly-named Espresso shade is my go-to.
