Chilly season, sorted
For autumn/winter dressing this season there’s a huge focus on practical and investment pieces that will work hard in our wardrobes. And if there’s one piece of clothing I never feel guilty about investing in – it’s a trusty winter coat. Autumn is the perfect time to take the plunge because I know I’ll easily get four or five months of wear from any coat I buy now and opting for a timeless style I truly love means it will be cocooning me in warmth for many chilly seasons to come.
But shopping for coats doesn’t have to be boring. We’ve seen TikTok trends like the mob wife aesthetic popularise decadent faux fur coats and workwear styling championing the power of long, tailored designs that make a soft and sleek statement. To easily curate AW24 outfits, I’ve been on the look out for versatile coats that act as the perfect final layer – let’s not sleep on the power of a quality coat to transform any look. It’s Gonna be a Long Winter

Long coats are the style you’ll see me most in. I love how no matter what you’re wearing underneath, a long coat proves the easiest way to make any outfit look put together. Tailored styles with padded shoulders are my favourite and I love styling these with more casual fits underneath to make the overall fit feel more elevated, or pairing with smarter office-style looks – think softly tailored suits, pencil skirts and boots.
A double-breasted silhouette lends a more formal edge to outfits, but this also contrasts nicely with casual denim and knitwear underneath. Plus, I also like playing with texture – shearling looks and feels super cosy and a classic cotton trench is traditional and a forever classic.

Teddy Bear Love
Fuzzy, snuggly and chic, a fur coat is always a good idea for autumn/winter styling. It’s such a statement layer but is also super comfortable and easy to throw over so many looks. Cropped always feels more casual but if you want something decadent that exudes that dark feminine energy that’s all over your TikTok feed, I’d opt for a longer line fur option. Saint Laurent’s animal-free fur longline coat is the ultimate splurge-worthy buy, plus you can find some great affordable styles from Mango and H&M.

Scarf Coats
Scarf coats and jackets are one of those styles that haven’t budged from fashion’s coveted top spots for a long while. And I can definitely see why. A coat/jacket and scarf combined into one easy throw-on item so you go from chilly to snug in just one step … I’m invested. This style has been a staple in my cold-weather wardrobe for the past few years so I definitely think it’s worth investing in. My favourite is from Toteme, it comes in both short and long versions (the shorter is my go-to because it feels lighter and more like a jacket, but with added warmth).

All-Purpose Puffers
A true all-purpose puffer coat transcends evolving trends so it will always be a necessity for chill-proof dressing in my book. With all the trips I’ve got coming up this winter, I’m keen to invest in a classic puffer coat. But whether this season has an impending ski trip in store for you, or simply cold-weather-themed activities closer to home, an insulating puffer is always a good idea. I love to switch between cropped and hip-skimming lengths when the day calls for jeans or leggings and snow boots, and a longer, belted style to feel super covered up and cosy.
