MAXIMALISM, THE UGLY SHOE PHENOMENON & A NEW 'IT' BAG AWAIT
When it comes to acing a Louis Vuitton show, Nicolas Ghesquière is a seasoned pro. It’s been a decade since he took the helm of one of the most powerful heritage fashion brands in the world, and a triumphant one at that. Bold, experimentally playful, and always with his unique Vuitton touch that continues to excite. It’s not Ghesquière’s first rodeo, and you can tell. Making maximalism for our everyday wardrobes, having some fun with capri pants and introducing a fiercely strong contender for fashion’s next ‘It’ bag, the French designer has been busy this season.
With my look for the show, it was all about channelling the monochrome moment fashion is having, perfecting the art of simplicity with a gorgeous sequined one-shoulder top and white split-hem long midi skirt complete with a contrasting black cross-over belt detail at the hips. It was Louis Vuitton, so of course the bag had me excited! I chose the Camera Box bag in Monogram-printed black calf leather with silver-colour hardware.

My top five takeaways from the show? Let’s go!

Retro Maximalism
From regal Renaissance-inspired looks, to ‘80s-style power dressing, the retro influences were aplenty and there was a big emphasis on maximalism. This sort of aesthetic has become a Ghesquière signature throughout his decade at Louis Vuitton, but for SS25, there was a clear focus on making these shapes feel modern and right for your wardrobe today. Puff sleeve jackets with cinched waists and peplum hems appeared in on-trend monochrome and classic tweed checks. Ruffle collars appeared a little softer, made up of petal-like organza embellishments and ‘80s-style shoulder pads paired with sheer fabrics and playful footwear.

There was a touch of this season’s love for ethereal dressing with asymmetrically draped tops paired with skirts knotted on one side at the knee and a sheer maxi A-line number. Plus, one-legged trousers (it’s fair to say these made a statement), and sparkly fringe maxi skirts worn with jackets covered in Renaissance-inspired paintings.

Capri Pants All Day
The evolution of capri pants in this year’s style zeitgeist has been particularly noteworthy for us eager fashion commentators. They were widely popular on summer social media feeds, and to bring them into the seasons ahead, the Paris fashion pack have had some fun experimenting with cut-off trousers. Striped and tweed capri pants made appearances, as well as sheer pantaloons in black, white and floral lace. Is it just me, or do they look tantalisingly wearable?

Bold Colours & Bolder Prints
This season has been all about making the bold looks that grace the runway appropriate for our everyday lives. Take Prada’s exploration of its signature ugly chic in Milan. Over at LV, Ghesquière had fun with playful multi-hued patterns, gemstone embellishments and colourblocking. A Bright orange exotic leather bag (LOVE), shoes in a fiery reddish palette and stripes in gradient brown and beige tones that felt very retro all added to the bold is better ethos.

Ugly Shoes for Cool Girls
Louis Vuitton is no stranger to pretty out-there shoe designs. Think last year’s surrealist Illusion Boots depicting a drawn-on high heel and leg (?!?). This season, Ghesquière delivered a whole host of perplexing footwear statements that were bold and just so fun. One style that repeatedly stepped out on the runway featured the leather top handles of classic LV trunks as straps across the front in both heeled and flat variations. An inventive use of the brand’s heritage for sure. There was also floral-looking foliage in black and white covering shoes to create an almost yeti-style slipper effect, even on heels.

‘It’ Bag Incoming
There’s always a lot of bags to love at a Louis Vuitton show. But for SS25, there was one style in particular that caught my eye. With a practical slouchy rectangular top-handle silhouette and silver-toned biker-style hardware details that remind me of the care-free cool-girl chicness of the Balenciaga City bag (another Ghesquière creation), this new design looks VERY promising. With a subtle single LV metal logo detail, it feels like something entirely new for the brand. My style senses are tingling and I predict we’ll be seeing a lot more of this hand-held accessory in upcoming seasons. You heard it here first!

And that wraps up another memorable show from Ghesquière for Louis Vuitton. Full of his signature boldness and regal dressing inspirations, he expertly experimented with emerging runway trends like only a true master designer can, while prioritising the house’s supremacy with handbags. Bravo!
