What I’m Investing in this Autumn

NEW SEASON, NEW STYLE RULES

There’s no use longing ourselves to be back on our summer holidays, beach bound with tanning oil on and a fruity beverage in hand, autumn has well and truly begun. But the drop in temperature doesn’t have to be a bad thing. The new season brings colour-changing leaves, cosy evenings and, best of all, new fashion collections. Think a colour palette of warm browns, rich burgundy and sophisticated neutrals, plus new textures and a mix of classic and statement silhouettes that are easy to rework over and over.

From versatile lighter options for early autumn (they’ll also prove great for when spring rolls around again next year) to the cosy favourites I love making part of my everyday wardrobe. Plus, investment-worthy outerwear I trust to see me through any kind of weather eventuality. Here’s a roundup of everything I’m investing in this season. Happy shopping!

TAKE IT OUTSIDE

Outerwear can be a one-step method for bringing together your look, so investing in a selection of quality options is key. This season, I’m excited about capes. Not as dramatic as they sound, shorter cape-style layers are an easy way to create a sophisticated silhouette, plus cape details are great for elevating simple styles you’ve had in your wardrobe for years – think trench coats with cape-style overlays (Burberry does the best). I’m also eager to embrace the return of the scarf-jacket hybrid (the ultimate multitasking cosy autumn layer)

A collared cropped boxy jacket or a slightly longer-line version with the option of a belted waist are tried-and-tested classics and a smarter alternative to biker or bomber styles. When it comes to tailoring this autumn, I’m a fan of a boxy blazer with a stand collar to make it feel a little more contemporary and sophisticated, great with my cashmere favourites and white shirts underneath.

KNITWEAR, BUT DIFFERENT

I’m ready to tackle the myth that knitwear has to be boring and unflattering to be cosy. Collars make for smart, yet still snug, office dressing. I also love incorporating traditional knit patterns like cable and argyle designs (Miu Miu are great at making these feel high fashion). The odd logo here and there will make your knitwear collection feel more statement and fun (Chanel and Loewe are my favourites for this). And you can elevate a simple knitted dress by opting for a unique texture – I recommend fuzzy mohair or a faux alternative.

BOOTS TO STOMP AROUND IN

Cowgirl-core, kitten heel love, folded cuffs. When it comes to boots, we’re seeing it all this season. Whether you go super trendy or opt for a more classic design, boots are always a wise fashion investment. Buy in September and you’ll still be strutting around in them come February, so we should all definitely be factoring in cost per wear to our boots purchases.

If you can handle a higher heel, The Row has some great classic black knee-high options. A sharp point toe or narrow square-toe style always gives a sophisticated finish. And for something a little more trend-driven, I love the slouchy silhouette (especially with midi dresses and skirts), plus styles that lean into the coveted cowgirl aesthetic with a slanted block heel and decorative stitching

ACCESSORIES TO MATCH

When it’s time to hang up my raffia beach bags and holiday-approved boho jewels, I like to go all in on autumnal accessories. Suede totes (as long as the weather permits) are a great way to add another texture to neutral outfits while cuff bracelets can give looks a statement finish. This may be an unpopular opinion but I personally think that baseball caps are an underrated accessory for the colder months, so when you’re next having a bad hair day, why not throw one on in an autumn-approved hue?
