THE GUCCI HORSEBIT BAG IS BACK
You could not have missed this one all over the internet, isnt it just beautiful? Ok tastes can differ and some people can love it more, others less but one thing is for sure – its iconic. If you haven’t yet decided on a designer handbag that you will splurge on this autumn 2023, keep an eye out for Gucci’s new Horsebit Chain bag. It is a reimagined resurrection of a well-liked Tom Ford for Gucci design from the year 2000 and boasts a maxi-sized version of the Italian brand’s signature equestrian-inspired symbol.
The re-edition of the Horsebit clutch continues Gucci’s recent practise of bringing back vintage favourites from its collection, including the Diana (made popular by the former Princess of Wales and our Queen of Hearts) and the Jackie purse. Given the popularity of Tom Ford designs for Gucci in recent years, it only makes sense that this very bag is making a comeback.
The Gucci Horsebit Chain Clutch is a small, lightweight purse that’s perfect for evening events, parties, and other situations where you need to carry only what’s necessary. It has a traditional elongated envelope shape. The design has a polished gold-tone horsebit accent on the front, which gives the entire appearance of the style a hint of luxury and sophistication.
The founder of Gucci, Guccio Gucci, was inspired by the equestrian world and the elegance of horse riding in the 1950s, which is when the Horsebit feature was first created. The Horsebit feature, which is shaped like a horse’s snaffle bit, was first applied to Gucci’s loafers and rapidly established itself as a defining aspect of the brand’s aesthetic.
The 1970s saw the initial release of the Horsebit Chain Clutch, which immediately gained popularity for the brand. As fashion trends and consumer demands changed throughout time, it was reinterpreted in a variety of materials, sizes, and colours.

20 years later - this bag is getting the popularity it deserves
Ford’s interpretation of the extended clutch didn’t quite reach ‘It Bag’ status after making an appearance in his Fall 2003 collection due to the increase in popularity of other Y2K bags, most notably Louis Vuitton monograms and Fendi Baguettes. Nevertheless, Gucci made it one of their best-selling items. Soon after, the bag was shown in the Fall 2003 campaign, which was photographed by none other than Mario Testino. In 2011, to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the company, designer Frida Giannini included the bag in the G. Gucci Firenze 1921 line. The bag most recently reappeared at the Italian brand’s Fall 2023 ready-to-wear runway show, where the design team—without the help of the creative director—drew inspiration from the previous thirty years of the label’s history to present fresh versions of the iconic bag.
The Horsebit Chain Clutch by Gucci has undergone a considerable amount of modification as the creative focus of the Florentine company has altered. Medium and large shoulder bags in conventional leather and canvas fabrications are among the original 2000s types. Nevertheless, variations of the eye-catching bag style that include various (often larger) sizes of the horsebit detail have recently undergone a rebirth. There are also models with metallic and crystal finishes, embossed, quilted, or exotic leather, as well as various chain lengths, widths, and materials.
