How to Take Your Blog To The Next Level? | Monday Confessions

ARE NUMBERS ALL THAT MATTER?

So I found myself in Barcelona chatting to a friend who just recently started her blog. We knew each other for years and she wanted to ask me for tips on how to take her blog to the next level.

I looked at her over my almond croissant as she continued “I have been doing this for 2 years now, but its still a hobby, I guess I need to grow my numbers more in order to start making money from this, right?”. I wasn’t sure if I was he right person to advise her on this, as blogging was never supposed to be a business for me, I never thought so strategically before it actually became a business, it happened spontaneously, but the times were different, and I had my first paid campaigns even when I had 10 000 followers. Its not the same as before, and she was wrong, it doesn’t matter how many followers you have. Its all about the quality of your game.

Now don’t get me wrong, numbers are really important as well, you need to have a nice size audience, to grab attention to have a following, but I know a blogger who had a huge audience ( I am talking millions) but never consistency to her content, which made it difficult to monetise and basically number simply didn’t mean a thing. There were times when regardless to her numbers she wouldn’t even get invited to some basic events, just because her strategy was all wrong. Now let me tell you how not to make the same mistake.

TIPS

1.BRANDING
Its incredible to me how many bloggers forget about this one, which is why I decided to speak about it first. We have all seen those bloggers who don’t have that many followers but still work with most prestigious brands, right? Its because heritage brands don’t are that much about numbers, they don’t need numbers, they need someone who reflects their brand. I don’t think that you will ever see Dior working with someone who is pretty trashy, who’s hair, clothes and attitude doesn’t reflect a real lady, feminine and smart. Simple as that. Make sure to know what you want your brand to be. It doesn’t have to be premium, maybe you want your blog to be about going out and about being a student, but then stay true to that. If you struggle to keep the same branding of your site, then make a mood board that will keep you on the right track. Colours, styles and quotes.

2.NETWORKING
This is simple and short. If you don’t know people you won’t get work, or invitations. If you don’t know them, get yourself out there and start networking. Its the only way.

3.BE REGULAR
If you don’t post regularly your readers won’t take you seriously. They are the most important factor in this equation. Listen to their feedback, write posts regularly, have a schedule, and produce the content that is similar to each other in terms of quality and branding (read back number 1). This will give your blog more credibility and growth.

4.YOUR CONTENT SHOULD REFLECT YOUR DREAM
If your dream is to work with Chanel but you constantly accept work from detergent brands, post a lot of almost nude photos and then go back to advertising pets food, maybe you should rethink the strategy. Your content only reflects what you will be attracting. So if you work with brands that are not so highly respectable in the industry you will attract more work from similar brands. If you say YES only to stuff you like, you are more likely to attract work from brands you like even more. Don’t be motivated by money, be clear to say NO to brands you don’t want to work with and build your reputation that way.

Hope this was helpful in some way, and that it clarified certain things. Its much more complex than just having numbers, it takes a lot of work, love and passion to create a good story. Know what you want, know what your readers want and give it to them.

1.BRANDING

2.NETWORKING
Kratko i jednostavno.

3.REDOVNOST
Ako niste redovni niko vas nece shvatiti ozbiljno. Ovo ce vasem blogu doprineti ugled i postovanje.

Those are really great tips! Branding is incredibly important, I love when I can spot a certain blogger in one second just by their photo pretty much anywhere! It’s also important to protect your blog as a brand and not associate yourself with cheap online stores and random products that has nothing to do with the theme of your blog, even if they offer good money for that kind of advertising. It’s just not worth it in a long run!

Totally agree. I enjoy reading blogs that have a their own style and stick to it much more than just blogs that post whatever without consistency. Thinking about it, I realise I should probably post more regularly too.. Good point :)

Bez truda i rada nema uspeha, ni u blogovanju niti bilo kom drugom pozivu.

I agree with all of this. But still my question is how to grow. I feel like your friend, blogging for just over two years and still feel at a dead end and don’t have the time to get out there and contact brands etc. It takes a lot of time to be on social media and interact and do blog posts let alone contact PR companies and brands.

What do you think? i would like to maybe do sponsored posts on bigger bloggers websites, that maybe one strategy.

These are really good tips! I fully agree with you when it comes to branding – from connecting bloggers with brands via work. As a new blogger myself, branding is something I’m still figuring out. Hopefully the story I’m trying to put across becomes clear soon. Thanks Tamara!
